High Court granted respite to Revanth Reddy

The Hyderabad High Court on Friday granted respite to  MLA A. Revanth Reddy by staying the defamation case filed against him by Dr A. Rameswara Rao, an industrialist. Justice M. Satyanarayana Murthy, while dealing with the petition filed by the MLA requesting the court to quash the defamation case pending against him before the court of special sessions judge, granted the interim stay.

Mr S.S. Prasad, the senior counsel appearing for the petitioner, told the court that the MLA had made a statement in a press conference in 2015 that the state government has allotted land worth about Rs 2000 crore free of cost to the industrialist.

Mr Prasad told the court that later, based on media reports, the industrialist moved the defamation case in the 17th additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court and later the case was transferred to  the special sessions court without the knowledge of the petitioner.  The counsel contended that the statement by the legislator did not amount to defamation of any person and it was his duty as an elected representative to bring the issues of public importance to the notice of the people.
